With puppies, everything is play. The harness has no padding because they aren't pulling anything heavy. Its only purpose is to get them comfortable with wearing one and to cultivate a happy positive attitude. They run around the yard doing whatever puppies do for about fifteen minutes a day. That's enough to get them used to the feel of a harness on their backs, and they usually are acclimated after two or three outings.
Next attach a short rope to the back tie on the harness and tie a small block of wood to it. At first they'll just sit, not knowing what to do but being puppies, they won't sit long! Before you know it, they're running around with the wood bouncing on the ground behind them. For larger breeds, use an old tire instead of a block of wood.
